PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
Permits/Inspections. Three (3) single family home permits were issued with an average square footage of 3,320 and seven (7) townhome permits were issued with an average of 2,486 square feet each. A foundation permit was issued for Brogdon Distribution for a new 117,000 square foot warehouse building at 783 Brogdon Road. A remodeling permit has been issued for Cantina Loca; the newest Downtown Sugar Hill restaurant scheduled to open soon in Broadstone. The buildout for Scoops is also nearing completion.
PARKS AND RECREATION
Parks. All-In Futbol Club (AIFC) and i9 Sports started their summer season with AIFC holding several camps. Atlanta United held a soccer camp last month in Sugar Hill. The 10-year celebration of the Community Garden was held at the end of last month. Weekly maintenance was performed throughout the park and the upper parking lot was repaired and repaved.
Downtown and City Hall. Weekly cleaning and maintenance were performed throughout the downtown area and on the grounds of City Hall. Fresh flowers were planted at the Veterans Memorial and throughout the downtown area.
E Center. Gym memberships have reached 13,522 and thorough cleaning practices continue throughout the facility. Private rentals for the Waterfall Room and the Promenade continue to be in high demand. The i9 basketball camp was held in the gymnasium and was well attended.
Golf. Despite a heavy dose of maintenance activity and rainfall on the course, June was very favorable to the Sugar Hill Golf Club. Industry trends continue to push more customers to this form of outdoor recreation, and we are seeing more and more guests at the driving range, practice green, grill, and pro shop. The Sugar Hill Golf Association (SHGA) hosts regular tournaments, provides friendly and challenging competition, and is a great way to refine your golf skills. COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Events. On June 26th, the city hosted a Friends of Disabled Adults and Children donation drive and collected $20,000 worth of equipment that will be donated to people in need. The month of June was very successful in terms of concession and ticket sales as well as in rental fees. The Players Guild began their production of Desamor on July 9th. The show is a cabaret that takes viewers on a journey of heartbreak and resilience and will run through the 18th of July. Tickets are still available so make plans to come see this exciting show before it ends. A free movie, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, will be featured in The Bowl on July 16th. The $2 movie, Trolls, will show in The Eagle Theatre tomorrow, the 13th of July and the next Splash Night will be held on the 30th of the month.
Economic Development. Broadstone is 100% pre-leased and 92% occupied. Cadence is 10% pre-leased and is operating their leasing office out of the Suite Spot. Staff is holding regular Community and Downtown Business Roundtable discussions to engage and enhance our citizen experience. The Soofa signs have been updated with new content and vinyl wraps for the season. Businesses can advertise on them, and we have been able to track foot traffic based on engagement with posts and promotions on the signs.
Communications. The Sweet Life Newsletter goes out this month and will cover the end of July, August, and September. Staff is starting a blog post section on the website that will feature stories that fall in the “in-between”. First up will be the 10-year anniversary of the Community Garden; and will be shared on the website this Friday. The city has several websites, social media pages, e-newsletter lists, and email lists residents can subscribe to. We encourage residents to like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, subscribe to our e-Blasts and pick up your local paper to see all the exciting things happening in Sugar Hill.
PUBLIC WORKS AND UTILITIES
Gas Department. We are holding at 50% with our AMR upgrades with staff devoted to responding to other series of construction-related demands. Our utility locating staff completed services on 550 sites and worked with our construction contractors on various sites around the city to protect our underground utilities. Staff has been working through regulatory compliance tasks, new service installations, and 39 other service requests to round out the workload last month.
Street & Stormwater Department. Yard debris operations delivered 2 loads of mulch and had 131 truckloads of bagged clippings collected. This resulted in nineteen (19) loads of debris to the disposal site. Open-top dumpster rentals for the month topped out at six (6), down slightly from the month prior. The stormwater department responded to four (4) requests for rock to ensure stormwater stabilization.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
Sugar Hill (Main) Greenway Trail. TriScapes Construction (TSI) is nearing a mile of trail constructed from downtown through EE Robinson Park (North). This will come very close to completing a continuous connection from downtown to the Gwinnett Church on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard (PIB), a distance of a little over 2.0 miles. TSI has turned their focus on the natural areas between PIB and Whitehead across the former GDOT right-of-way, finalizing the clearing portion in these segments and beginning to work on the bridge and boardwalk sections north and west of Level Creek Road.
This phase of the greenway trail includes 4 and a half miles of trail construction, beginning at the intersection of Level Creek Road and Church Street and extending both along roadways and through natural areas to Whitehead Road, temporarily ending at a trailhead parking lot at the Bethany UMC Church located at 144 Whitehead Road near the new bridge.
Roadway Resurfacing & Repairs 2020/2021. Construction is at the 80-percent point with all but the Frontier Forest subdivision roads complete. The contract includes:

Work on the highlighted roads/areas above have been completed.
Gold Mine Park. Construction is set to begin in July. TriScapes was selected as the city’s contractor for this new project. The proposed park serves as a trailhead on the city’s greenway and offers a chance for guests to learn more about the city’s gold mining history.
22 Acre Park on Highway 20. This project is finishing up scoping and design of pond, parking, and pavilion improvements.
Whitehead & Sycamore Sidewalk Improvements. The design phase is wrapping up on this SPLOST-funded project to upgrade older sections of sidewalks, design future LCI-level improvements, and fill-in a short gap near EM Croy on Sycamore.
