Permits/Inspections. During the month of June fifty-seven (57) townhome permits were issued for Carlton North subdivision with an average square footage of 2,079 square feet. A certificate of occupancy was issued for the Lowe’s Distribution Center at 783 Brogdon Road. A remodel permit has been issued to remodel 50,934 square feet of Publix. Permits were also issued for Windstream which will occupy approximately 160,000 square feet of the new Sugar Hill Distribution Center at 655 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
PUBLIC SAFETY
Meetings & Resources. Chief King and Deputy Chief Smith continue to meet with local law enforcement officers to build working relationships and obtain resourceful information. These meetings will provide training opportunity within the department. Deputy Chief Smith attended the District Chief meeting held in Suwanee.
Community Engagement. Staff attended several events in the month of June including the Greenway Ribbon Cutting and Splash Night.
Parking. Parking signs have been posted in several areas and warning notices are being placed on vehicles that are in violation and subject to being towed. Some illegally parked boats and recreational vehicles were found at Gary Pirkle Park this past month. The owners were located and have removed them from the premises.
Patrols. Marshals continue to patrol the neighborhoods and businesses within Sugar Hill now that the marked patrol cars have arrived. Paradigm Security Services continues to perform patrols of the city between the hours of 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM.
PARKS AND RECREATION
Parks. Atlanta United held a tournament at the park with 400 participants. All-In Futbol Club and i9 Sports held several summer camps in the month of June. There are 105 garden plots in the Community Garden for the 2022 season. The new garden pavilion is complete and will be a valuable resource to the garden members and board. The pavilion matches the architectural style of the existing barn and its proximity to the barn and garden make it even more beneficial to many of the educational and training opportunities we have at the garden.
E Center. Gym memberships have now surpassed 16,638. Come check out the new fitness equipment at the gym or enjoy the indoor walking track and ball courts. The number of reservations for the Waterfall Room and classrooms continue to remain high. The spaces are being rented for both public and private events and meetings.
Golf. June ended serving as one of the best months the course has had to date. Favorable weather helped the turf repairs and the overall course continue to grow-in and contributed to more golfers discovering our golf club. A successful Sugar Hill Golf Association tournament was held on June 18th and 19th and despite the heat, the two days resulted in a good competitive golfing event. Splash Park. The park continues to see large crowds on a daily basis given the hot temperatures and the kids being out of school for the summer. The hours of operation are from 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM daily (weather permitting – guests are encouraged to check the website and social media for closure information prior to making the trip).
Splash Night, the free community event that occurs the last Friday of each month (5:00-9:00 PM from May – September) takes place on the Plaza behind City Hall. The event includes live entertainment, local food trucks, inflatables, games, and much more. The next Splash Night will be held on July 29th.
COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Events. In June, The Mavericks performed for the first concert of the season at The Bowl. The Eagle Theatre hosted On the Stage Children’s Theatre for a 2-week summer camp. The group had 3 performances of Seussical Jr. and will be back for another 2-week summer camp in the theatre where they will be performing Newsies and Pirate’s Past Noon. We celebrated with live music and fireworks at Sparks in the Park this month. John Berry’s 26th Christmas Tour was announced, and he will be performing at The Eagle Theatre on November 25th. Tickets are on sale now for our two Eagle concerts (Tommy DeCarlo, singer of the band Boston, and John Berry) as well as our upcoming Bowl concerts (Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Robert Cray Band, and Diamond Rio.)

PUBLIC WORKS AND UTILITIES
Gas Department. We are currently holding at 7,865 transmitters in our AMR system to date, with our staff focused on other tasks during the month of June. Our utility locating staff completed services on 698 sites up considerably from May and we continue to coordinate with construction contractors on various sites around the city to protect our underground utilities. Staff has been working through regulatory compliance tasks, new service installations, and 48 other service requests to round out the workload last month.
Street & Stormwater Department. Yard debris operations delivered 10 loads of mulch and had 124 truckloads of bagged clippings collected. This resulted in 12 loads of debris to the disposal site. We did not have any open-top dumpster rentals during the month of June. The stormwater staff kept busy with our regulatory compliance program inspections along with pre- and post-storm event drain cleaning as we move into thunderstorm season of short, but heavy rainfall. Stormwater staff prepared and submitted our annual report to Georgia EPD as a part of our compliance program.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATES
Sugar Hill Greenway Trail. Paving along the segment between Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Level Creek Road has been completed, while TriScapes, the city’s contractor, works to grade the shoulders and get any remaining disturbed areas stabilized with mulch. The connections from the asphalt sections to PIB and to Level Creek Road have just been completed.
A big milestone for the project was reached in June with the arrival of bridge #1, being installed closer to Whitehead Road. While not as long as the other bridge over Level Creek, this bridge will provide an equally scenic walking experience.
When this installation is complete, work can begin paving this section of the Greenway.
The final section of the trail, near Bethany Church on Whitehead Road, is substantially complete. It will connect to a parking area from which you can walk under the road and travel up through a natural wetland to link up with the woodland section leading to Gold Mine Park.
Many of the project’s natural segments follow the old Georgia DOT right-of-way for the outer perimeter, taking visitors through many of the most scenic places in the city that could have been a six-lane highway through the city. A pedestrian crossing signal will be installed on Level Creek Road near the back entrance to Gwinnett Church where the trail will cross (just south/west of Markim Forest subdivision). The signal, at the entrance to the city’s newest park, Gold Mine Park, will be activated once the trail is closer to completion and the county approves the signal installation.
Gold Mine Park. TriScapes, the city’s general contractor has made significant progress on the small (2.4 acre with 7 acres of greenspace), but important park. The berm to the south of the project brought to final grade, mulched and landscaped. The parking lot and driveway have been paved. The park will have some fifty parking spaces, a restroom, bicycle racks, and information about the cultural and historical significance of the area.
E Center Event Space. The city’s contractor on the E Center Event Space and Conference Room, Barnsley Construction, is near completion on the project. During June, the interior finishes, fixtures, cabinets and glass were installed for the small meeting space proposed to be in the northeast corner of the parking level at the E Center. The space consists of two areas that can be used for classes, meetings, or events. Reservations for these areas will soon be available for both public and private parties.
Visitors will notice walls and brickwork as well as an outside patio area with iron awnings, like those on the promenade of the E Center. The contractor will wrap-up the final construction items on the space within the next six weeks.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
In the month of June, 162 new gas service applications and 160 disconnects were processed. A total of 19 new meters were installed. There were 11,851 active meters billed in the month of June. A total of 13 new business licenses were issued. Passport totals reached 179 with 155 photos processed this past month.
